Starting the semester in January can be particularly hard for students, especially this year with snowy and freezing cold weather that we have had in Switzerland. One thing that the student body does not always know, is that being in Glion or Bulle, we are very close to some of the most impressive mountain scenery in Europe. That is why most of our weekend activities and excursions, in the first half of the semester, took place in the mountains.

We started off with a tobogganing evening in Leysin (40min. away from Montreux,) we had more than 70 students, from both Glion and Bulle campus. The Tobogganing Park in Leysin is a unique attraction in Switzerland. Created by a Swiss Olympic bobsleigh champion, ice tobogganing is a new form of fun for anyone who likes to get their adrenalin flowing. What could be better than racing down the slopes, some of them up to 250 meter long, with built-in steep curves. The students absolutely loved it!!!

We then went on ski/snowboard outings for both beginners and intermediate/advanced. We had two very successful beginners trips with over 40 students from all around the world, some had never seen snow or never skied before. During that day, the students had 2hrs of lessons with Swiss ski school instructors and then they have free time in the afternoon to practice their skiing/snowboarding skills on their own, a fantastic experience for them all. For the intermediate/advanced trip we went to “Les Portes du Soleil” which is a major ski resort destination in the Alps, encompassing thirteen resorts between Mont Blanc in France and Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

Other fun excursions were a fondue evening where students had the choice of tobogganing or ice skating and then met up to have a fondue in igloos. A true Swiss cultural experience, students were very excited as some had never tried fondue before! Another very popular excursion with more than 50 students attending is the Geneva Motor Show one of the most prestigious car shows in the world.

Recognition should go to our rugby and football players who have braved the cold, snowy conditions during their training sessions. After the Easter mid-term break we look forward to offering students more traditional team sports and competitions against other clubs and hotel schools in the region.

As the weather is slowly getting better here is an overview of the excursions coming up:

  • Thermal Baths
  • Rafting
  • Europa Parc (Germany – biggest theme park in Europe)
  • Gruyere Treasures – visit of the cheese and chocolate factory
  • Wake and water skiing
  • Lucerne city tour
