The World After 2020

Twice a week throughout this series, we will be presenting a focused session investigating some of the geopolitical outcomes from this crisis, the lessons to be learned and how the hospitality industry may have to adapt to a new world. Each 90-minute class will be hosted by Yves Schemeil, Emeritus Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Institut d’ Études Politiques – Sciences Po, Paris.

About the Speaker

Yves Schemeil holds a Ph.D. in Political Science and is currently an Emeritus Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Institut d’Études Politiques – Sciences Po, Paris. He also is extremely active on the online scene and is currently running a series of geopolitical courses on the Future Learn platform: Global Studies: International Relations and World Politics. He serves on many scientific committees and has a broad international teaching experience including UCLA and Berkeley.

Legends of Hospitality: Robert Alter

This interview with one of the legends of hospitality, Robert Alter, will give you insight into the thought processes of the hospitality industry’s well-known leaders.

About the Speaker


Robert A. Alter is one of the premier hotel investment and management executives in the industry. He is Chairman Emeritus and Founder of Sunstone Hotel Investors, Inc. a company he created in 1985 and for which he served as CEO for 22 years. During this time Sunstone acquired 125 hotel properties with more than 20,000 guest rooms. Mr Alter is currently President of Seaview Investors, LLC, a real estate investment management company that operates hotels in Southern California.

His life as a hotel owner began in 1976, when he struck out on his own at the age of 25, using his savings to purchase a 28-room hotel in the Colorado ski resort of Steamboat Springs. Since then, he has acquired many important properties, including Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, the Hilton Times Square and the Renaissance Hotel Washington, DC. He has received a number of entrepreneurial awards throughout his career, while also giving back to future hospitality leaders by guest lecturing for the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University (his alma mater) and the Hotel School.
