Montreux (Switzerland), 4 July 2019—Glion Institute of Higher Education, one of the world’s top five institutions for a hospitality and leisure management (QS World University Rankings 2019), is partnering with Canton of Fribourg’s incubator Fri Up to develop and support student entrepreneurs of the new Master’s degree in Hospitality, Entrepreneurship and Innovation. The first program intake on 5 September 2019 will include around twenty students.

The MSc in Hospitality, Entrepreneurship and Innovation spans two academic semesters and a six-month internship, aiming to train tomorrow’s entrepreneurs and innovators in the customer experience industry. All students will undergo rigorous theoretical instruction and practical training, including field visits, case studies, student projects and events. The first semester is devoted to the basics of hotel business and operations, as well as innovation challenges, start-up creation and business development, with field trips to Berlin and Paris and an online boot camp. The second half of the year is focused on the execution of new ventures with a focus on digitization, which has become an essential part of the service industry, and the financing of start-up projects. The academic and practical semesters conclude with an innovation fair and trips to Silicon Valley and Napa Valley. The last semester of the Master’s degree includes a six-month internship, usually in a start-up.

As part of the Master’s degree, Fri Up, the official business creation support body of the Canton of Fribourg, will advise and support student entrepreneurs with their innovative projects adding value to the hotel and services sector in Switzerland.

The partnership consists of coaching and mentoring students during their studies, entrepreneurship courses and venture creation workshops. Students looking to better understand the local entrepreneurial ecosystem can complete internships with start-ups in Fribourg.

“In recent years, the hospitality and service industries have seen major innovations and new business models, mainly due to technology. It is a world of opportunities for our students who are passionate about service and want to start their own business. Through this new Master and partnership with Fri Up, students learn the different stages of venture creation and acquire the tools to succeed with their projects,” explains Marie-France Derderian, Director of the MSc in Hospitality, Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Glion. “Our objective is to bring together complementary perspectives of professionals and entrepreneurs, which will give students a better understanding of the Swiss business environment.”

“For us it is essential to stimulate business creation and cultivate start-ups in areas in which the Canton of Fribourg has a long tradition of innovation,” says Grégory Grin, Director of Fri Up. “From this perspective, Glion is our partner of choice, not only because a large part of students are located on the Bulle campus in Gruyère, but above all because the new Master program in Entrepreneurship is relevant and comprehensive, combining academic learning, industry immersion and practical experience.”
