A worldwide lockdown and social distancing may have prevented traditional sports from taking place, but it has not stopped the Sports Committee from bringing students together. In an innovative example of the true Glion Spirit, the committee organized the first eSports tournaments, as Student Ambassador, Dewi, explains.

During these times with social distancing restrictions, the Sports Committee has kept the international Glion community connected through three eSports tournaments. ESports tournaments are not like any other, what started as a niche online community is now a billion-dollar industry with players all over the globe and some of the biggest games and creators taking part in their events.

Swapping technique for technology

Traditional sporting events are held on our campus by the Sport Committees, such as football, rugby, basketball, badminton, and volleyball, where we compete with other schools in Switzerland. The Glion Sports Committee wanted to keep this level of excitement alive by holding a variety of eSporting tournaments: FIFA, NBA, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

To keep the same standard as eSports tournaments held around the world, the event started with the group stages, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals to determine a first, second, and third place. There were 6 players for the NBA game, 18 players for Call of Duty, and 21 for FIFA.

Bringing students together

Carlo Umberto the president of the Sports Committee mentioned in an interview: “This was the first eSports tournament ever organized in Glion, we developed it to keep the Glion spirit high”. To build the drama, publicise the tournament and maintain fairness for all participants, the committee conducted a live draw on the glion.studentlife Instagram page.

There were a few challenges in setting up the tournaments, not least creating the ideal schedule to accommodate all of the players in their worldwide time zones. Nevertheless, these were opportunities to learn, implement skills and use initiative. The eSports event ended up being a big hit, giving the students a new way to ‘exercise’ their competitive spirits and keep in touch with team mates and fellow students around the world.
